AUTISM INITIATIVES OPEN SENSORY ROOM AT THE OAKS IN RAMSEY

Autism Initiatives have opened their sensory room at the Oaks on May Hill in Ramsey. The installation was considerably delayed due to lack of funds and the new facility will greatly assist the organisation's ability to provide a full package of support to the users of the Oaks.

Sensory rooms are environments in which stimulating activities and experiences are used to increase awareness for individuals with sensory impairment. They have been shown to enhance skills such as sensory development (hearing, sight, taste, smell, and touch), hand/eye coordination, cause and effect, language development, control over one’s environment, and relaxation.

The pictures show Oaks users Sarah (top left and bottom right) and Ross (top right) together with Autism Initiatives Isle of Man manager John Legardere in the sensory room shortly before Christmas. The current well equipped room contrasts favourably with the condition when the then Minister for Health and Social Services Steve Rodan (now Speaker of the House of Keys) attended the Oaks for the official opening in April 2006.  (all photos Murray Lambden)
